About us

About us
Candlewick Public School was started in 1987 by Wg. Cdr. H.S. Rathore and Mrs. Raj Rathore. Mrs. Rathore had extensive experience in education and Wg. Cdr. Rathore brought great administrative and leadership qualities from a successful career with the Indian Air Force. The team offered a very compatible mix of experience and strategic thinking which led to the establishment of a fine institution.
The primary motivation which led to the start of Candlewick was the dearth of good institutions in Jaipur in the 1980s. The period witnessed a growth in the quantity of educational institutions but the quality of the education was sadly absent.

Affiliation
The school is affiliated to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and follows the national curriculum framework of 10+2 as prescribed by the Board.

Medium of instruction
The medium of instruction for teaching at Candlewick is english. There is strong emphasis on mastering english to prepare students for today’s global world.

Hindi is taught as a stand-alone subject.

Co-education
Candlewick is a co-educational school. We believe that co-education encourages equality, co-operation and healthy competition among the genders and prepares students for real life.

Vision
More than twenty-five years ago the foundation of Candlewick was laid with a thought in mind and a vision to create an atmosphere conducive to learning. It was a humble endeavour to strive for excellence and to bring into existence a school with a difference.

From the Director’s Desk

Education is the most valuable resource that a student can acquire in his or her life. It’s importance lies in the fact that it always remains with us and is never lost. All other things in life – wealth, power and even people around us are inconsistent. Education stays with us and acts as a guiding light in our lives.
My own experiences as a resident student at one of the most renowned institutes of the country and as a cadet at the National Defence Academy (NDA), taught me the value of education and discipline in life. At Candlewick too we believe in imparting quality education and lay emphasis on discipline. We strive to develop the analytical capabilities in students, which enable them to understand their own aptitude and inclination. This helps students to cope with the ups and downs of life, and grow into good decision makers.

Today Candlewick has carved a niche for itself. With our constant endeavor to impress strong moral values upon our students and by creating the right learning environment, all-round development of the students is achieved. Thus making Candlewick students stand out in a crowd.

I’m glad that you’ve decided to know more about us, and, as you browse through these pages you’ll get a sneak preview of the enriching experiences that your child will have in his/her journey with Candlewick.

Candlewick’s History

It is amazing how quickly things fall into place once a person is prepared to take the plunge. In that sense, Candlewick ran true to type. Once the idea was conceived, the development of the school acquired a momentum of its own. Candlewick Public School became a reality on the 18th of July 1987.

In the beginning, it was a case of simple living and high thinking. The school had a strength of seven students. It had its fair share of teething problems. Infrastructure, including the very basic chairs and benches, had to be generated from scratch. The shortfall of teaching and non-teaching staff had to be made up without compromising on their quality. But the biggest challenge was to convey the ideas represented by Candlewick to the general public without indulging in a prolonged and expensive marketing exercise. Each issue was tackled separately. No stone was left unturned in a drive to get quality teachers. The final short-listing of teachers was on the basis of various parameters such as :-

(1) Previous experience.
(2) Academic and family background.
(3) Personal appearance including their body- language.
(4) Ability to reach out to and motivate the students.
(5) Willingness to work in a team.

The non-teaching staff was selected on the basis of their potential efficiency and their gentleness with children.

The infrastructure was also built up and improved simultaneously. One incident exemplifies the struggle the school faced in its early days. The incident occurred in those days when Candlewick had just started using buses for transporting the children. One morning the driver of a bus failed to arrive, leaving everyone waiting at his or her bus stand. At that moment, Wing Commander H.S. Rathore, Mrs Rathore’s husband, who was home on leave, decided to take charge and drive the bus himself.

Wg Cdr Rathore, now the Director of Candlewick looks back on the incident with a twinkle in his eye and remembers how the sight of him at the wheel of the bus caused acute embarrassment to parents who were waiting at the bus-stands with their wards.

The Shifting of Candlewick
Candlewick survived its early battles and emerged stronger for them. Its rapid expansion forced a change in its premises first to Devi Marg and then, on the 13th of July 1998 to its present location at Vidyadhar Nagar. Here, its growth has been accelerated with a new class or section being added virtually every year. In the years that have passed since then, the school has grown by leaps and bounds. The strength of the school has increased. This considerable increase has come despite the fact that no active marketing has ever been done. What publicity has taken place has been by word of mouth. It is apparent even to a chance visitor to the school that Candlewick’s atmosphere is electric with positive energy that motivates a person to give his best. Discipline is strict, but not harsh. The onus is on enjoying one’s studies. The manner in which teaching is done ensures that the students can relate to even the grimmest of subjects. This, unconsciously, helps them to gauge their own interest and aptitude and in turn helps them in the selection of a career. The teachers also try to help the students overcome their fear of failure-a problem, which is particularly apparent among students in ‘Board Year’. It is impressed upon students that the examinations are not a ‘Holy Grail’, but are merely a test of what they have learnt till that stage of their education.

The Road Ahead
The school is moving in the right direction. No one would hazard a guess as to how far Candlewick’s brisk rate of progress would take it in the coming decade. What can be hoped for is that the dream of making Candlewick’s name synonymous with quality education is coming true. Candlewick will grow and change in both quality and quantity, but what will never change are the values that it is based on the same values that each of its students believes in.
